South Texas Health System McAllen sits just off Expressway 83 in central McAllen, and the main entrance is on South McColl Road — if you’re coming from the west side of town during afternoon rush, McColl can back up between Nolana and the hospital. DHR Health Women’s Hospital is about 10 miles east in Edinburg, a straight shot down McColl or 10th Street. South Texas Health System McAllen, just off Expressway 83 in central McAllen, is the city’s primary maternity hospital — with a verified Level III NICU that was the first in the Rio Grande Valley when it opened over 25 years ago, and a dedicated Maternity Center that’s been delivering babies for 35+ years. STHS Edinburg, the system’s sister facility about 8 miles east, also has a Maternity Center with L&D and a midwifery program — but families who may need NICU access deliver here, because STHS McAllen is where STHS Edinburg transfers neonatal cases. DHR Health Women’s Hospital, about 10 miles east in Edinburg, is the first and only designated Level IV Maternal Facility in the Rio Grande Valley — recognized by Texas DSHS for handling the most complex maternal cases. With 24 birthing suites, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and VBAC support, it’s the referral destination for high-risk pregnancies across the RGV.
