Memphis’s three major hospital systems — Methodist Le Bonheur, Baptist Memorial, and Regional One Health — are clustered within the Memphis Medical District off Poplar Avenue and Union Avenue, roughly 10–20 minutes from most neighborhoods. I-240 forms a loop around the center of the city and can back up badly during rush hour, especially near the Poplar and Union exits. If you’re coming from Germantown or Collierville on the east side, plan an extra 15–20 minutes for appointments. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital provides the region’s highest-level NICU right on the Methodist campus. Summers are brutally hot and humid — regularly above 95°F from June through September — and winter ice storms can briefly shut down overpasses. Overton Park and the Greenline are popular third-trimester walking spots near the hospitals.

Hospitals & Birth Centers in Memphis

Here's what you need to know about the hospitals where Memphis moms deliver.

Methodist University Hospital (Methodist Le Bonheur) hospital

Methodist University Hospital (Methodist Le Bonheur)

Methodist University Hospital, at 1265 Union Avenue in the Memphis Medical District, is the largest hospital in the Methodist Le Bonheur system and is affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital — on the same campus — has a verified Level IV NICU (stated directly on lebonheur.org), the highest-level NICU in the region, making this the referral destination for complex pregnancies and critically ill newborns across the Mid-South. The OB-GYN residency program means 24/7 coverage. Use our free hospital birth plan template to get your preferences documented.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis hospital

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, at 6019 Walnut Grove Road in East Memphis, is the flagship of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system with 706 beds and a Level III NICU (contact the hospital directly for current NICU level verification). Walnut Grove is a major east–west corridor, so getting here from Germantown and Collierville is straightforward during off-peak hours. Baptist is known for a more private, community-hospital feel compared to the academic centers, and its Women’s Center offers LDRP suites. Download the free birth plan template before your hospital tour.

Regional One Health hospital

Regional One Health

Regional One Health, at 877 Jefferson Avenue, is Shelby County’s safety-net hospital and home to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center. It has a Level III NICU (contact the hospital directly for current NICU level verification) and provides high-volume OB services to TennCare and uninsured families. If you’re delivering here, the staff is deeply experienced with a wide range of birth situations — and having a birth plan helps them support your preferences in a busy environment. How it works

What Doula & Midwife Support Looks Like in Memphis

Not sure what the difference is?

A midwife is your medical provider: she can deliver your baby, write prescriptions, and monitor your health. A doula is your support person: she keeps you comfortable, informed, and emotionally held, but doesn't do medical tasks. You can have both, and many Memphis moms do. Learn more about what a doula actually does →

A doula walking alongside an expectant mom, offering continuous labor support

Memphis sits in Shelby County, which has one of the highest Black infant mortality rates in Tennessee — and a powerful, growing community fighting to change that. Organizations like CHOICES and A Better Balanced Birth center reproductive justice and Black maternal health equity. The birth community here is rooted, resilient, and deeply connected to the rhythms of a city where family and faith run everything.

Continuous labor support

A doula stays with you from early labor through delivery. No shift changes, no leaving the room.

Evidence-based comfort techniques

Breathing, counter-pressure, position changes, proven to reduce C-section rates and shorten labor.

Advocacy before and during birth

Your doula helps you understand your options and practice saying what you want, before you're in the delivery room.

Postpartum follow-up, too

Most Memphis doula packages include at least one postpartum visit, because birth support doesn't end at delivery.

Whether this is your first baby or you're preparing for a VBAC, understanding what a doula does, and how a doula can change your birth experience, can help you decide what support is right for you. Planning for a specific scenario? Read our VBAC birth plan guide or our C-section birth plan template.

How Much Does a Doula or Midwife Cost in Memphis?

In the Memphis area, birth doula packages typically range from $700 to $1,700. Midwife fees vary by type and setting — home birth midwives usually charge a global fee of $4,000–$8,000, while hospital-based CNM care is billed through insurance like a doctor's visit. See our full doula cost breakdown for what's included and what to ask about. If you're also thinking about support after baby arrives, learn what a postpartum doula does and how one can help.

If that number feels steep, you're not alone, and there are options:

  • Medicaid: Unfortunately, your state does not yet cover doulas through Medicaid. Some community organizations and volunteer doula programs offer free or reduced-cost support. Ask at your local WIC office or community health center.
  • HSA/FSA: Many families don't realize that doula services can often be paid for with HSA or FSA funds, since birth support qualifies as a medical expense under most plans. Check with your plan administrator.
  • Sliding-scale doulas: Many Memphis doulas offer payment plans, sliding-scale fees, or reduced packages. Don't be afraid to ask.
  • Student doulas: Doulas in training often attend births at reduced rates. It's a great option if budget is tight.

Does Medicaid or Insurance Cover a Doula or Midwife in TN?

Tennessee’s Medicaid program, TennCare, does NOT cover doula services as of 2026. HSA and FSA funds can be used for doula fees, and some Memphis doulas offer sliding-scale pricing. Organizations like A Better Balanced Birth and the Shelby County Health Department’s community doula program may offer reduced-cost or pro-bono support — ask when you interview.

Since TennCare doesn’t cover doulas, check whether your private insurance covers out-of-network doula services. HSA and FSA reimbursement is available nationwide for doula fees. Contact your provider directly to confirm coverage details.

Not sure what to look for in a doula or midwife? Here's how to choose a doula who fits your birth preferences, your personality, and your budget. For a full breakdown of which states cover doulas and midwives through Medicaid, see our Medicaid doula coverage guide.

What About a Midwife in Memphis?

If you're considering a midwife, you're in good company. More Memphis moms are choosing midwifery care each year. Here's what to know:

Not sure whether you need a doula, a midwife, or both? Our doula vs. midwife guide breaks it down clearly.

  • Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) work in hospitals and birth centers and are covered by Medicaid in all 50 states.
  • Midwives vs. OBs: Midwives spend more time with you: longer appointments, more conversation, less rushed. OBs are surgeons trained for complications. Both are valid choices for different situations.
  • You can have both: Many Memphis practices pair midwives and OBs so you get midwifery-style care with a doctor backing you up if needed.
  • Birth centers: Memphis doesn't currently have a freestanding birth center, but midwifery care at local hospitals is still a great option.

When to Start Looking for a Doula or Midwife in Memphis

Start looking around 12 to 20 weeks. That gives you time to meet a few doulas, compare approaches, and lock someone in before their calendar fills up — popular Memphis doulas often book up by the third trimester. Already past 20 weeks? Start now. Most doulas have room in their schedule and would rather work with you late than not at all.

The earlier you connect, the more time your doula has to learn your preferences, understand your hospital's policies, and build trust before labor day. Use the free app to browse doulas serving Memphis and start reaching out today.
