Reno’s two birthing hospitals — Renown Regional Medical Center near downtown at 1155 Mill Street and Sierra Medical Center in south Reno at 6500 Longley Lane — are roughly 20 minutes apart via I-580. Both hospitals have verified Level III NICUs (verified on renown.org and northernnevadahealth.com), so high-acuity newborns don’t need to transfer to Las Vegas or Sacramento. I-580 and I-80 form the Spaghetti Bowl interchange downtown, which backs up during morning and evening rush; if you’re coming from Spanish Springs or Cold Springs, South Virginia Street to Renown is usually faster than battling I-80. Summers break 95°F regularly and winter Sierra snowstorms can slow the hospital drive — know your route before 38 weeks. The Truckee River Walk and Idlewild Park loop are popular third-trimester strolls close to Renown.

Hospitals & Birth Centers in Reno
Here's what you need to know about the hospitals where Reno moms deliver.

Renown Regional Medical Center
Renown Regional Medical Center, in central Reno at 1155 Mill Street, is the largest hospital in northern Nevada and home to Renown Children’s Hospital with a verified Level III NICU — the region’s first and only Level III NICU. High-volume L&D with 24/7 neonatology, maternal-fetal medicine, and obstetric anesthesiology. Doulas are generally welcome, though visitor policies shift, so confirm during your hospital tour. If you’re delivering at Renown, having your birth plan in hand makes check-in smoother — they see a lot of families and move fast. Use our free hospital birth plan template to get started.

Sierra Medical Center
Sierra Medical Center, in south Reno at 6500 Longley Lane, is the newer addition to the Northern Nevada Health System. It has a Level III NICU (verified on northernnevadahealth.com) and a dedicated Family Birth Center with LDRP suites. Sierra consolidated the maternity services that were previously at the Sparks campus, so all L&D now happens here. The south Reno location is convenient for families in the Damonte Ranch, Galena, and south Truckee Meadows areas — about 10 minutes from I-580 and the South Meadows Parkway interchange. Download the free birth plan template before your tour.

How it works
What Doula & Midwife Support Looks Like in Reno
Not sure what the difference is?
A midwife is your medical provider: she can deliver your baby, write prescriptions, and monitor your health. A doula is your support person: she keeps you comfortable, informed, and emotionally held, but doesn't do medical tasks. You can have both, and many Reno moms do. Learn more about what a doula actually does →
Reno is northern Nevada’s healthcare hub, drawing families from across the Truckee Meadows and Sierra foothills. The birth community is small but tight-knit — a mix of hospital-based and home-birth midwives, doulas who serve both Reno and Sparks, and military families from the region’s installations. Expect a pragmatic, Western-independence vibe where asking for help isn’t weakness — it’s how you show up prepared.
Continuous labor support
A doula stays with you from early labor through delivery. No shift changes, no leaving the room.
Evidence-based comfort techniques
Breathing, counter-pressure, position changes, proven to reduce C-section rates and shorten labor.
Advocacy before and during birth
Your doula helps you understand your options and practice saying what you want, before you're in the delivery room.
Postpartum follow-up, too
Most Reno doula packages include at least one postpartum visit, because birth support doesn't end at delivery.
Whether this is your first baby or you're preparing for a VBAC, understanding what a doula does, and how a doula can change your birth experience, can help you decide what support is right for you. Planning for a specific scenario? Read our VBAC birth plan guide or our C-section birth plan template.
How Much Does a Doula or Midwife Cost in Reno?
In the Reno area, birth doula packages typically range from $800 to $2,000. Midwife fees vary by type and setting — home birth midwives usually charge a global fee of $4,000–$8,000, while hospital-based CNM care is billed through insurance like a doctor's visit. See our full doula cost breakdown for what's included and what to ask about. If you're also thinking about support after baby arrives, learn what a postpartum doula does and how one can help.
If that number feels steep, you're not alone, and there are options:
- Medicaid: Unfortunately, your state does not yet cover doulas through Medicaid. Some community organizations and volunteer doula programs offer free or reduced-cost support. Ask at your local WIC office or community health center.
- HSA/FSA: Many families don't realize that doula services can often be paid for with HSA or FSA funds, since birth support qualifies as a medical expense under most plans. Check with your plan administrator.
- Sliding-scale doulas: Many Reno doulas offer payment plans, sliding-scale fees, or reduced packages. Don't be afraid to ask.
- Student doulas: Doulas in training often attend births at reduced rates. It's a great option if budget is tight.
Does Medicaid or Insurance Cover a Doula or Midwife in NV?
Nevada Medicaid does NOT cover doula services as of 2026. HSA and FSA funds can be used for doula fees, and some doulas in the Reno area offer sliding-scale pricing. Community-based programs through the Washoe County Health District’s Maternal & Child Health division and local birth equity collectives may offer reduced-cost or volunteer doula support — ask individual doulas what’s available.
Whether doula services are partially covered varies by plan in the Reno area. Check whether your plan covers out-of-network doula services, and whether HSA or FSA funds can help cover out-of-pocket costs. Contact your provider directly to confirm.
Not sure what to look for in a doula or midwife? Here's how to choose a doula who fits your birth preferences, your personality, and your budget. For a full breakdown of which states cover doulas and midwives through Medicaid, see our Medicaid doula coverage guide.
What About a Midwife in Reno?
If you're considering a midwife, you're in good company. More Reno moms are choosing midwifery care each year. Here's what to know:
Not sure whether you need a doula, a midwife, or both? Our doula vs. midwife guide breaks it down clearly.
- Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) work in hospitals and birth centers and are covered by Medicaid in all 50 states.
- Midwives vs. OBs: Midwives spend more time with you: longer appointments, more conversation, less rushed. OBs are surgeons trained for complications. Both are valid choices for different situations.
- You can have both: Many Reno practices pair midwives and OBs so you get midwifery-style care with a doctor backing you up if needed.
- Birth centers: Reno doesn't currently have a freestanding birth center, but midwifery care at local hospitals is still a great option.

When to Start Looking for a Doula or Midwife in Reno
Start looking around 12 to 20 weeks. That gives you time to meet a few doulas, compare approaches, and lock someone in before their calendar fills up — popular Reno doulas often book up by the third trimester. Already past 20 weeks? Start now. Most doulas have room in their schedule and would rather work with you late than not at all.
The earlier you connect, the more time your doula has to learn your preferences, understand your hospital's policies, and build trust before labor day. Use the free app to browse doulas serving Reno and start reaching out today.
