38 Weeks Pregnant: Fine-tuning for birth

Baby development

Your baby at 38 weeks

Your baby keeps fine-tuning important skills like swallowing, breathing motions, and body temperature regulation. Even when everything feels "done," your baby is still using this time to get stronger and more prepared.

Your body this week

What you might be feeling at 38 weeks

Any day now. Your body might be showing early signs of preparation — increased discharge, more Braxton Hicks, pelvic pressure, the baby dropping lower. Focus on rest, hydration, and gentle movement. Walk, bounce on a birth ball, rest.

Thirty-eight weeks. You might be feeling the early signs that your body is getting ready — increased discharge, more frequent Braxton Hicks, pelvic pressure, the baby dropping lower into your pelvis. With my fifth, I waddled into my 38-week appointment and my doctor said, "The baby's head is right there." I didn't go into labor for another nine days. Every body is on its own timeline. This is when I tell my doula clients to really focus on rest, hydration, and gentle movement. Walk, bounce on a birth ball, rest. Your body knows what to do. Trust it.
