Third Trimester · Week 34
34 Weeks Pregnant: Smoother skin, longer nails
Baby development
Your baby at 34 weeks
Your baby's skin is getting smoother as more fat is stored under the surface. Fingernails are also continuing to grow, which is one of those tiny details that makes babies feel more and more "finished."
Your body this week
What you might be feeling at 34 weeks
Your baby's lungs are maturing. You might be feeling Braxton Hicks more frequently, and your body might be starting to prep in subtle ways. This is when many providers start reviewing your birth plan in detail. If you have a doula, solidify your relationship now.
From Shelbi
Shelbi Kohler · mother of seven · certified birth doula
Thirty-four weeks. With my first, this was the week my doctor said, "If the baby came now, we'd be okay." That sentence changed everything for me. Your baby's lungs are maturing, and the NICU stay, if needed, gets shorter every day. You might be feeling Braxton Hicks more frequently, and your body might be starting to prep in subtle ways — loose joints, cervical changes, the baby dropping lower. This is also when many providers start checking your birth plan and talking through your labor preferences in detail. If you have a doula, this is the time to solidify your relationship and talk through your hopes and fears.
