First Trimester · Week 5
5 Weeks Pregnant: As small as an apple seed
Baby development
Your baby at 5 weeks
This week, the neural tube is forming, which will become your baby's brain and spinal cord. Another amazing detail is that the early heart tube starts developing now and will begin pulsing very soon.
Your body this week
What you might be feeling at 5 weeks
The wait for your first prenatal appointment can feel agonizing. Physically, you may notice heightened smell, mild nausea starting, breast tenderness, and frequent urination. Or you might feel completely normal — which can be its own source of anxiety.
From Shelbi
Shelbi Kohler · mother of seven · certified birth doula
This might be the hardest week emotionally, and nobody talks about it. You know you're pregnant, but you can't see a doctor yet, you can't feel the baby, and you can't tell anyone. With my first, I spent this week googling everything that could go wrong, checking the toilet paper every single time, and driving myself crazy. What I learned by pregnancy number seven: the wait for that first appointment is agonizing no matter what, but your body knows what it's doing even when your mind doesn't. You don't need to feel any particular thing yet. Just take your prenatal vitamins and be gentle with yourself.

Common questions
5 weeks pregnant: your questions answered
Why won't my doctor see me yet? +
Most providers schedule the first prenatal appointment between 8-10 weeks. This is standard — the embryo is too small to see or measure meaningfully before then.
I don't feel pregnant — is that normal? +
Yes. Many women have no symptoms at 5 weeks. Symptoms typically begin around weeks 6-8, but some women feel fine throughout early pregnancy.
